What We Believe

What are PetMeds' three privacy principles?

PetMeds holds three standing privacy principles: we never sell your data to anyone, we protect your pet's prescription data under HIPAA-equivalent standards, and we make opting out easy from every channel. These are policy, not marketing.

We never sell your data.

Not to advertisers, not to data brokers, not to anyone. Your email, phone number, purchase history, and prescription data all stay inside PetMeds.

We protect prescription data.

Your pet's medication history is treated the same way a human pharmacy treats yours — HIPAA-equivalent protection, need-to-know access only.

We make opting out easy.

Every email has an unsubscribe link. Every preference has a toggle. Every request gets a real response within 30 days. No dark patterns.

Full Policy

What is in the PetMeds privacy policy?

The PetMeds privacy policy covers eleven sections: information we collect, how we use it, when we share it, prescription data protection, payments and card data, cookies and tracking, security, your rights, children's privacy, changes to the policy, and how to contact us. It's written in plain English where possible, and precise where required.

1. Information we collect

We collect information in three main ways: information you give us, information we collect automatically when you use our site, and information we receive from partners you've authorized. We do not collect your Social Security number, driver's license, or any human health information.

Information you give us

  • Name, email address, phone number, and shipping address
  • Payment card details (processed securely, never stored in plain text)
  • Pet names, species, weight, and age (used to size prescriptions correctly)
  • Prescription details and veterinarian contact information
  • Communications with our customer care team and pharmacists

Information we collect automatically

  • IP address, browser type, device type, and operating system
  • Pages visited, links clicked, and time spent on the site
  • Referring URL and search terms that led you to PetMeds
We don't collect: Your Social Security number, your driver's license, or any information about your human health. We only collect what's needed to fill prescriptions, ship orders, and answer your questions.

2. How we use it

PetMeds uses your information for six purposes: filling and shipping orders, customer care, account management, improving the site, compliance with pharmacy regulations, and optional marketing and personalization that you've opted into through the Preference Center.

  • Filling and shipping orders. To process prescription medications, verify with your veterinarian, package shipments, and deliver to your door.
  • Customer care. To answer your questions, resolve issues, and follow up on orders.
  • Account management. To maintain your account, process AutoShip subscriptions, and manage pet profiles.
  • Improving our site. To find bugs, improve speed, and understand which parts of the site help pet parents most.
  • Compliance and legal obligations. To comply with state and federal pharmacy regulations and respond to lawful legal requests.
  • Optional marketing and personalization. Only if you've opted in through the Preference Center above.

3. When we share

PetMeds shares information only in narrow circumstances: with your veterinarian to verify prescriptions, with shipping carriers to deliver orders, with PCI-certified payment processors, with our pharmacy team, and when required by law. We never sell, rent, or trade your data.

  • With your veterinarian. To verify prescriptions and coordinate care for your pet.
  • With shipping carriers. Your name and address are shared with USPS, FedEx, or UPS to deliver your order.
  • With payment processors. Your card details are shared with PCI DSS Level 1 certified payment processors to process payments.
  • With our pharmacy team. Licensed pharmacists and technicians who need prescription details to fill your order.
  • When required by law. If a court order or state pharmacy board requests information, we comply to the extent legally required.
We never sell your data. PetMeds does not sell, rent, trade, or otherwise disclose personal information or prescription data to advertisers, data brokers, or any third party for their own marketing purposes. This is a standing policy — not a temporary position.

4. Prescription data

Information about your pet's prescription medications is treated with HIPAA-equivalent protections, even though HIPAA technically applies only to human health data. Access is limited to the pharmacists reviewing your order, the care team handling your account, and compliance officers investigating potential issues.

Access to prescription data is limited to:

  • The pharmacist(s) reviewing and filling your order
  • The customer care team members handling your account
  • Compliance officers investigating potential issues

We never use prescription data for marketing. We never sell it. We never share it with third parties except for the shipping and payment processors needed to fulfill the order, and even then only the minimum information required.

5. Payments & card data

All payment processing is handled by PCI DSS Level 1 certified processors — the highest level available. Your card number is encrypted end-to-end and never stored in plain text. AutoShip card tokens can be used to charge future orders but cannot be used to see, read, or reconstruct your card number.

When you save a card for AutoShip, we store a tokenized reference provided by our payment processor. That token can be used to charge your card for future orders, but it cannot be used to see, read, or reconstruct your card number.

You can remove a saved card at any time from your account settings.

6. Cookies & tracking

PetMeds uses four categories of cookies: essential (required for login, cart, and security), analytics (anonymized usage data), personalization (remembers preferences), and advertising (only if you've opted in). The last three are controllable in the Preference Center above.

  • Essential cookies. Required for the site to work — login sessions, cart persistence, security. These can't be disabled.
  • Analytics cookies. Anonymized usage data that helps us improve the site. Controllable in the Preference Center.
  • Personalization cookies. Remember your preferences and pet profiles across visits. Controllable in the Preference Center.
  • Advertising cookies. Only used if you've opted in, to personalize ads you see on other sites. Controllable in the Preference Center.

7. Security

PetMeds protects your data with encryption in transit and at rest, PCI DSS Level 1 payment certification, role-based access controls, regular third-party audits, employee background checks for pharmacy staff, and continuous monitoring. If a security incident affects your data, we notify you directly within 72 hours.

  • Encryption in transit (HTTPS / TLS 1.3) and at rest
  • PCI DSS Level 1 certification for all payment systems
  • Role-based access controls — only team members who need to see data can see it
  • Regular third-party security audits
  • Employee security training and background checks for pharmacy staff
  • Continuous monitoring for unusual activity

If we ever discover a security incident that affects your data, we'll notify you directly, in plain language, within 72 hours.

Common Questions

What are the most common PetMeds privacy questions?

The privacy questions pet parents ask most are: does PetMeds sell my data (no), is prescription data protected (yes, HIPAA-equivalent), how do I opt out of marketing (three ways), does PetMeds comply with CCPA and GDPR (yes), can I request a copy of my data (yes, within 30 days), and what happens to my data if I delete my account (deleted, except prescription records retained as required by state law).

No. PetMeds does not sell, rent, trade, or disclose personal information or prescription data to advertisers, data brokers, or any third party for their own use. This is a standing policy and not subject to change without your explicit consent.

Yes. We treat pet prescription data under HIPAA-equivalent standards even though HIPAA technically applies to human health data only. Only the licensed pharmacists and care team members who need to fill your order can see your pet's medication history. We never use it for marketing and never sell it.

Three ways. First, click the "Unsubscribe" link at the bottom of any PetMeds email. Second, use the Data Preference Center above and toggle off "Marketing & Promotions." Third, call 1-800-738-6337 and a representative will remove you. All three take effect immediately.

Yes. PetMeds complies with the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). If you're a California or EU resident, you have additional rights to access, correct, delete, and port your data, and to opt out of any "sale" of information (which we don't do anyway). Contact us to exercise those rights.

Yes. Call 1-800-738-6337 and we'll prepare a complete export of your personal data — account details, order history, pet profiles, communications, and preferences — in JSON or CSV format. We deliver it within 30 days by secure download link.

When you delete your PetMeds account, we delete all personal information, order history, pet profiles, and payment tokens. The one exception is prescription records, which we're required to retain for the length of time specified by state pharmacy law — usually 5 years from the date of the last fill. After that, they're deleted.
