Rural King was founded in 1960 in Mattoon, Illinois. It began as a single farm and home store serving local families who needed feed, seed, tools, and honest advice in one place. The company was built on a simple promise — carry what rural families actually need, and price it fairly.
Mattoon was a railroad town in the middle of Illinois farm country. In 1960, rural families lived by the seasons, worked by the weather, and made the drive to town a couple of times a month for the supplies that kept the farm running. What they needed was a store that carried everything — feed for the livestock, seed for the spring, boots for the winter, work gloves for every day in between.
Rural King opened its doors to be that store. Not a hardware store. Not a feed store. Not a clothing store. All three, under one roof, run by people who knew the customers by name and knew the answers because they'd lived the questions.
